Epidemiological alert - Seasonal influenza and other respiratory viruses in the Southern Hemisphere - 17 April 2025

Considering the beginning of the season of increased circulation of influenza and other respiratory viruses in the southern hemisphere of the Americas, the ΓΓΝΕ / World Health Organization (ΓΓΝΕ/WHO) recommends Member States to review and adapt their preparedness plans and the organization of essential health services delivery, in anticipation of potential surges in demands for health systems. ΓΓΝΕ/WHO recommends strengthening surveillance for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2, as well as adopting the necessary measures for the prevention and control of respiratory virus infections, implementing measures to ensure early diagnosis and appropriate clinical management, especially among the population at high risk of severe disease, guaranteeing vaccination against respiratory viruses, ensuring high vaccination coverage in high-risk groups, adequate forecasting and organization of health services, the strict compliance with infection prevention control measures, having adequate supply of antivirals and personal protective equipment, and ensuring risk communication for populations and health professionals. |
