Will I have time to travel while I'm abroad?

We encourage study abroad students to explore as much of the country or region as possible.

What is the difference between a WMU program and a University-approved provider program?

  • WMU programs are typically hosted by WMU faculty representing various disciplines. Offerings include semester-long programs, academic-year programs (two or more semesters), and short-term programs; there is a program applicable to almost every major offered at WMU. The program fee is billed to a student鈥檚 WMU account and paid directly to WMU.
  • Third-party or external study abroad 鈥減roviders鈥 are companies that facilitate study abroad programming. Providers specialize in traditional travel and virtual internships and study abroad programs. Students may participate in programs offered through providers that have been approved by WMU Study Abroad. Students who wish to participate on a program offered by a non-approved provider will be required to submit additional paperwork and participation will be subject to review and approval by WMU Study Abroad. Students who work with a provider are required to complete a study abroad application in Broncos Abroad.
  • Students taking study abroad courses (including internships) to fulfill "WMU Essential Studies" and electives usually seek course approvals from college and department advisors. Students taking study abroad courses and internships to fulfill requirements for their majors and minors must seek explicit approval and signatures from an academic advisor in the respective department. This information is compiled on the WMU Study Abroad Course Equivalency Form.
